Multi-stemmed evergreen tree or large shrub with deep brownish-red flaking bark. Large, matt, deeply veined, dark green leaves, up to 35cm long, with a dark rusty red indumentum underneath. Large trusses of waxy, sometimes pink flushed, creamy pale yellow flowers in April and May.
Sheltered location with lime-free soil.
Suitable for large woodland gardens.
Native of Sikkim and the Himalayas. Introduced by Sir Joseph Hooker in 1850.
